County official charged with assaulting journalist in Homa Bay

A Homa Bay County official has been charged with assaulting a journalist.

Beatrice Mercy Akugo, the County Human Resource Manager, appeared before the Homa Bay Law Court where she was charged with assault and causing bodily harm to Mr Habil Onyang’o Oloo, a reporter with People Daily.

The prosecution told the court that the offence took place on Sunday, 14th September 2025, at Lake Front in Homa Bay Sub-County. 

Mr Oloo was allegedly attacked while covering an event.

Akugo denied the charges before Chief Magistrate Jacinta Orwa. She was released on a bond of KSh 30,000 with a surety of a similar amount or an alternative cash bail of KSh 20,000.

The case is scheduled for mention on 30th September 2025.
