The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has approached Bunge la Mwananchi to help mobilise youths to register as voters.

During a meeting in Nairobi on Friday, IEBC Vice Chairperson Fahima Araphat Abdallah, said the Commission recognises Bunge la Mwananchi’s wide grassroots network and its influence among young people.

Ms Abdallah urged the country’s young people to take up their civic duty, stressing the power of registration.

“You have waited long enough. I urge you to come out in large numbers to fulfil your constitutional mandate. Your ID is not a card — it is your power,” Ms Abdallah said.

The discussion was held under the theme “Your participation is not an option, it is your patriotic duty!”

Bunge la Mwananchi National Chairman Lawrence Oyugi welcomed the partnership, saying his organisation would work closely with IEBC to reach more youths.

“We will join hands with the Commission in every county to urge young Kenyans to register and vote,” Mr Oyugi said.

The two sides agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide future collaboration on voter education and mobilisation.

According to IEBC data, voter registration remains low across the country.

By the second week of the ongoing exercise, only about 20,000 new voters had been listed — far below the target.

Many of those registering are older citizens, while youth turnout remains poor, especially in urban areas.

Bunge la Mwananchi operates in more than 36 counties and is known for amplifying the voice of ordinary citizens.

IEBC believes working with such civic movements will help bridge the information gap and inspire more young people to take part in elections.

Eligible Kenyans are urged to visit the nearest IEBC registration centre with a valid ID or passport before the deadline.

“Your participation is not optional — it is your patriotic duty,” Ms Abdallah reiterated.
