The Judicial Service Commission has appointed Deputy Chief Kadhi Sukyan Omar Hassan as acting Chief Kadhi following the death of Sheikh Abdul-Halim Athman in July 2025.
In a memo dated August 6, 2025, Chief Registrar of the Judiciary Winfridah Mokaya said the decision was made on July 14, 2025, in line with the Constitution and the Kadhis’ Court Act.
Sheikh Abdul-Halim died on July 10, 2025, leaving the position vacant.
Sukyan Omar, who is also Senior Principal Kadhi, will serve for three(3) months or until the position is filled.
The office of the Chief Kadhi has previously been held by prominent Muslim scholars, including Sheikh Hammad Kassim, Sheikh Muhdhar Khitamy, and Sheikh Nassor-al-Nahdy.
The Chief Kadhi heads the Kadhis’ Court, which handles matters of Muslim law on marriage, divorce, inheritance, and personal status for Muslims.
