Kenyan Muslim leaders have urged the government to take a firm stand on the war in Gaza, saying continued silence is indefensible as the humanitarian crisis deepens.

Speaking in Nairobi under the Voice of Palestine initiative, leaders from the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM), the National Muslim Leaders Forum (NAMLEF), the Jamia Mosque Committee, and the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) called on Kenya to use its international voice to demand peace and justice in Palestine.

“This is not just about politics… it’s about humanity. Kenya must lead in demanding an end to the suffering,” said Mr Ahmed Shariff, speaking on behalf of the coalition.

The leaders accused Israel of weaponising starvation and urged the Kenyan government to call for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza and to reconsider its diplomatic ties with Israel.

They said over 70,000 people have been killed since last year’s military offensive, with most of Gaza’s population displaced and critical supplies blocked.

“This is a calculated crisis,” said Mr Shariff.

“Starvation is being used as a weapon.”

The Coalition also launched a tree-planting campaign to raise funds for Palestinian relief while supporting Kenya’s reforestation targets.

The initiative will involve collaboration with government and private sector partners.

Drawing comparisons with the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the leaders warned against global indifference and said Kenya, shaped by its own colonial history, has a moral responsibility to speak out.
