Kilifi Governor Mung’aro loses dad on Father’s Day

Kilifi Governor's grief was felt in the honesty of his words--a son stripped of his father on the very day he would have called to say, “Thank you.”

The sun rose gently over Kilifi on Sunday, casting golden light across the homesteads and coconut groves.

It was Father’s Day--a time to celebrate the men who raised us, shaped us, and walked beside us. But for Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, the day would end not in celebration, but in heartbreak.

As families across Kenya exchanged warm messages and tender memories, the Governor was bidding farewell to his own father, Mzee Gideon Baya Mung’aro Senior, who passed away at the Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

The 89-year-old former Senior Chief of Gede Location, known for his wisdom and lifelong service to community, breathed his last on a day that now holds double meaning for his family — a day for fathers, and now, a day of mourning.

Governor Mung’aro broke the news in a personal and emotional social media post.

“Today, on Father’s Day, I lost my father. It’s a deeply painful moment, but I’m truly grateful for the love, support, and prayers from family, friends, and all who’ve reached out. Your kindness is helping us through this difficult time. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart,” Governor Mung'aro posted.

There was no need for formalities. His grief was felt in the honesty of his words--a son stripped of his father on the very day he would have called to say, “Thank you.”

The late Mzee Mung’aro was a respected elder whose legacy stretches across generations in Kilifi. During his tenure as a senior chief, he played a central role in shaping Malindi, Dabaso, and the broader Gede area. His commitment to community welfare and firm sense of justice left a mark that cannot be erased.

News of his passing sent waves of sympathy across the country.

Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir were among the leaders who offered heartfelt condolences. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party described the late Mzee as a “great man who made the modern Malindi and Dabaso what it is today.”

Governor Wanga captured the national mood best, saying: “This loss coming on Father’s Day makes it even more profound. May you find strength in the cherished memories and enduring legacy of your beloved father.”

Even as preparations begin for the burial, the mood in Kilifi is subdued. Flags fly at half-mast in hearts, and the Governor now walks with the quiet burden of memory — of a father’s advice, encouragement, and unshakable belief.

For Kilifi, Mzee Mung’aro was more than the governor’s father. He was a steward of tradition, a quiet force for good, and a reminder that true leadership often begins at home.

As the county joins the family in mourning, we at AVDelta News extend our deepest condolences. May Mzee Gideon Baya Mung’aro Senior rest in eternal peace.
