Kenya’s matriarch, Dr Ida Betty Anyango–Odinga, on Sunday celebrated her 75th birthday, a milestone met with warm wishes from across the political spectrum.
Known affectionately as “Min Piny” (Mother of the Earth), her life’s journey—from educator to activist, businesswoman to politician’s wife—has earned her admiration and respect.
Nairobi Woman Rep Esther Passaris led tributes on social media, calling Ida “a pillar of strength, wisdom, and grace” whose decades of public service “continue to inspire generations of Kenyans.”
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) extended its greetings too, posting: “Join us in wishing Mama (Dr) @IdaOdinga… a happy birthday… We are proud of you, Mama Ida.”
In previous years, Raila Odinga has made his affection clear. Reflecting on a past birthday, he said, “On each of your birthdays like today, I reflect on how you are by far the best thing that ever happened to me. Your strength, resilience, wisdom, and prayers have brought our family this far. Happy birthday, my dear Ida Betty.”
Dr Ida Odinga was born on August 24, 1950, and holds a degree from the University of Nairobi.
She taught at Kenya High School before stepping into leadership roles, including founding the League of Kenya Women Voters in 1991.
A trailblazer, she was once ranked among Kenya’s most powerful women and became one of the first Kenyan women to lead a major company, serving as MD of East African Spectre.
Her lifelong dedication includes advocacy for women’s empowerment, health—particularly breast cancer and fistula prevention—and community education infrastructure, such as a major library she funded at her former primary school.
As she marks 75 years, Ida Odinga stands as a beacon of perseverance, intellect, and compassion.
Her celebrations honour not just her longevity, but the lives she’s touched through her work, her wisdom, and her boundless spirit.
