Mombasa County's ongoing efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability have received a significant boost with the arrival of Plastic Odyssey, a 40-meter vessel dedicated to innovative recycling solutions.
The ship docked at the Port of Mombasa on Wednesday night and will remain for several days, hosting workshops and community outreach programs aimed at empowering locals to reduce plastic waste.
Plastic pollution has been a growing challenge along the Kenyan coast and across the wider Indian Ocean region, threatening marine ecosystems, fisheries, and tourism.
In response, Mombasa County has led efforts to combat plastic waste by enforcing bans on single-use plastic bags, promoting waste segregation, and supporting community clean-up campaigns.
Beyond the county level, the Kenyan government has partnered with international organizations and regional bodies such as the Indian Ocean Commission to develop strategies targeting marine litter and plastic debris.
These initiatives align with global goals under the United Nations Environment Programme to reduce plastic waste in oceans.
Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has also been actively involved through its Green Port Policy, launched in 2015. The policy emphasizes sustainable port operations, waste management, use of hybrid and electric equipment, dust suppression, and mangrove restoration along the coastline.
It reflects a broader commitment to minimizing environmental impact while supporting economic growth.
Operated by a French NGO, Plastic Odyssey is a floating laboratory equipped with technology that converts plastic waste into fuel, tiles, pipes, and other reusable materials.
The ship's hands-on workshops are designed to inspire sustainable recycling initiatives that can generate new economic opportunities within local communities.
"Hosting Plastic Odyssey highlights Mombasa's role as a regional hub not only for trade but also for environmental leadership and sustainable development," says a statementby Kenya Ports Authority.
After its stay in Mombasa, the vessel will continue its East African tour, spreading awareness and practical solutions for plastic pollution across the region.
