Hundreds of worshippers joined political and religious leaders at Karisa Maitha Grounds in Kilifi for an interdenominational Memorial Mass honouring ODM leader Raila Odinga’s long political journey and sacrifices.

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro, the host of the service, said the event offered Kenyans a moment to reflect on “the resilience and consistency that built ODM into a national movement”.

Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir told the congregation that the mass served as a reminder that ODM had survived two decades because of discipline and shared conviction.

“As we celebrate ODM @20, we honour the men and women who carried this movement through sacrifice and courage,” he said.

“Raila Odinga has been the pillar holding this dream together.”

Speakers highlighted Raila’s contributions to devolution, multiparty democracy, justice for marginalised communities, and expanding civic space across the country.

Clerics urged followers of the movement to remain grounded in unity and service.

On Saturday night, President William Ruto joined ODM leaders at the party’s Founders’ Dinner in Mombasa, where he delivered one of his most notable public tributes to Raila.

He said Raila’s commitment to ODM’s principles had stood the test of time.

“Raila Odinga believed in ODM more than even his supporters believed in him,” the President said.

“Strong political parties are the foundation of Kenya’s democracy, and ODM has played a pivotal role in shaping that space.”

Dr Ruto revealed that his recent private meeting with Raila focused on Kenya’s transformation agenda.

That included plans to extend the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from Naivasha to Kisumu and Malaba.

He assured ODM that the government would continue to release its full entitlement from the Political Parties Fund, adding that rivalry should not derail national progress.

“ODM and UDA share almost 80 per cent of their development priorities,” he said.
