President William Ruto arrived in New York on Sunday evening to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The President is expected to push for broad reforms in global governance, development finance, and climate action.
State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said in a Saturday statement that Dr Ruto’s agenda includes advocating reform of the global financial system, fair access to development finance for developing countries.
He is also expected to push for a more inclusive United Nations structure that can address peace and security challenges more effectively.
President Ruto is also expected to engage with fellow Heads of State, government leaders, and private sector executives to strengthen existing ties.
He will want to explore new partnerships in key areas including agriculture, technology, infrastructure, and energy, all aligned with Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
As Chair of the African Union’s Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), Dr Ruto will use his time in New York to lead Africa’s push ahead of COP30 in Belém, Brazil, ensuring that climate commitments reflect the continent’s vulnerabilities and development needs.
Security and conflict resolution also feature prominently in the President’s plans.
According to the spokesperson, Dr Ruto will call for strengthened peace efforts in conflict-affected regions including Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), Somalia, and Haiti.
Observers note that arriving early allows the Kenyan delegation to settle into what is expected to be a busy High-Level Week of UNGA.
During his visit, bilateral meetings will be critical. Dr Ruto, the State House statement says, will also host or attend side-events such as a breakfast on affordable housing, and various high-level forums meant to draw in investments, especially to support Kenya’s domestic transformation agenda.
Kenya will also press Africa’s case for a more meaningful role in UN decision-making structures, including pushing for reforms of the UN Security Council under the Intergovernmental Negotiations to make membership more representative.
