President William Ruto wowed congregants at St Peter’s ACK Cathedral in Siaya on Sunday, August 31, 2025, with a playful jab.

He quipped that he’d always thought Raila Odinga belonged to the Legio Maria sect, only to be corrected when told the opposition leader is Anglican.

“I thought he was a member of Legio Maria,” he joked, sending the congregation into laughter.

The President then shifted to the pressing issue of the cathedral’s unfinished state.

“This cathedral has taken twenty years, yet many of you here have completed your houses. But the house of God remains unfinished,” he said, urging the congregation to finish what it started.

He pledged Sh20 million toward its completion, including Sh5 million donated on behalf of Raila Odinga.

The President called upon local leaders, including Governor James Orengo and MP Opiyo Wandayi, to help mobilise further resources.

The two-decade delay in constructing the cathedral has been attributed to inconsistent funding and changing local priorities.

That  made the structure a potent symbol of prolonged community effort and the need for collective resolve.
