The Catholic church on Monday turned down a weekend offertory from President William Ruto.

Also earmarked as unwanted and due for return to the giver is the donation to Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi by Governor Johnson Sakaja.

Mr Sakaja had issued Sh200,000.

President Ruto had given a personal donation of Sh2 million to fund the construction of a parsonage.

An additional Sh600,000 was made to the Church choir. It has too earmarked for a refund to President Ruto.

The church cited laws governing public fundraising as Albi for turning down the offertory.

Rev Philip Anyolo who signed the letter on Monday, said the church has a right to denounce gifts that may seek to compromise its dependence.

"The church is called to uphold integrity by refusing contributions that may inadvertently compromise its independence or facilitate unjust enrichment," the statement by church leaders said.

The statement added “the promised additional Sh3 million for the construction of Father's house as well as the donation of a parish bus by the president, are hereby declined”.
