Lamu County’s tourism sector received a significant boost on Saturday as the cruise vessel MH Diana docked at Lamu Port, bringing with it 120 tourists from Zanzibar.

The 126-metre-long ship marks its second visit to the picturesque coastal town, following a successful call in 2023 that left visitors eager to return.

As the sun rose over the Indian Ocean, the atmosphere at the port was electrifying. Traditional dancers adorned in colourful attire welcomed the guests with rhythmic beats and vibrant performances, setting the tone for a memorable day in Lamu.

Tourists were treated to an array of Swahili snacks and refreshing coconut drinks, immersing themselves in the local culture from the moment they stepped ashore.

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy highlighted the significance of the vessel’s arrival, noting the diverse nationalities represented among the tourists.

“This influx of visitors not only boosts our economy but also solidifies Lamu’s reputation as a premier cruise tourism destination in East Africa,” Governor Timamy stated.

The Governor emphasized that collaborations between the County Government and Lapsset (Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor) have played a pivotal role in enhancing the cruise tourism experience in the region.

Governor Timamy added, "Through our Department of Tourism, we are committed to marketing Lamu’s rich culture and historical heritage, ensuring that we remain an attractive destination for cruise ships and tourists alike.”

Lamu County's Chief Executive Committee Member for Tourism Aisha Miraj echoed the Governor’s sentiments.

“We are honored to welcome the MH Diana and its passengers to our shores. It is essential for all tourism stakeholders to collaborate and enhance our offerings, ensuring that both our community and the local economy benefit from such visits,” she said.

During their stay, the tourists explored Lamu’s renowned historical sites, including the Old Town, a Unesco World Heritage Site.

Many expressed their delight at experiencing the town's unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.

“I’ve always wanted to visit Lamu, and it certainly lived up to my expectations. The hospitality, the food, and the stunning architecture have made this a highlight of my travels,” said Sarah Thompson, a tourist from the UK.

Local businesses also felt the positive impact of the ship’s arrival. Vendors selling handmade crafts, souvenirs, and local delicacies reported increased sales, with many anticipating a boost in tourism-related revenue.

“The cruise ship brings us so much opportunity. I have seen more customers today than I do in a whole week. It is a great chance for us to showcase our work and culture,” said Amani Ali, a local craftsman.

The successful docking of MH Diana is seen as a vital step towards reviving the tourism sector in Lamu, which has faced challenges in recent years due to insecurity.

The county’s government is actively working to promote Lamu as a safe and attractive destination, leveraging its rich cultural heritage, stunning beaches, and historical significance.
