Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has made his first international assignment since he assumed office on November 1, 2024.

On Friday, Prof Kindiki landed in Gaborone, Botswana to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new President Duma Gideon Boko.

Boko, an advocate, beat the incumbent Mokgweetsi Masisi in the just concluded elections.

“Kenya salutes and commends the people of Botswana for exercising their civic and constitutional rights in the just concluded elections in an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Kenya and Botswana continue to enjoy fraternal relations in diverse fields, among them, trade, security, education, agriculture and energy for the benefit of the people of the two(2) nations,” Kenya's DP Prof Kindiki posted on his X account.

He is representing President William Ruto.

“Honoured to represent President William Ruto during the inauguration ceremony of His Excellency Duma Gideon Boko as the 6th President of the Republic of Botswana,” Prof Kindiki added.

Back at home, Prof Kindiki made his first address on Thursday in his capacity as the Deputy President, a week after he was sworn-in following a Constitutional and Judicial process.

Prof Kindiki has served as a Law lecturer, legal practitioner, Senator, Majority Leader of the Senate, Deputy Speaker of the Senate, Interior Cabinet Secretary, before rising to the DP position.

“It remains astounding how a son of Kenya, born some 52 years ago in Tharaka, a remote part of the then Meru District and in a humble homestead of a rural clergyman and his housewife spouse could eventually get the opportunity to serve this country in the esteemed and high office of Deputy President of the Republic,” Prof Kindiki said on Thursday.

“My assumption to the Office of Deputy President has presented me with an opportunity to reflect on our Country’s past, present and future,” he added.

Prof Kindiki took over following the impeachment of second Deputy President under the 2010 Constitution Mr Rigathi Gachagua.

Mr Gachagua was in October impeached by the Parliament - both the National Assembly and the Senate.

His impeachment challenge case is active in court.

Mr Gachagua's lawyers argue that the impeachment process was unprocedural and that the charges were frivolous.
