Eight police officers interdicted over Jumaisi escape

Acting Inspector-General (IG) of Police Gilbert Masengeli on Tuesday interdicted eight police officers for allegedly aiding with the escape of a suspected serial killer from Gigiri Police Station on Tuesday morning.
This comes after Collins Jumaisi, a prime suspect in the alleged murder of 42 women in Kware, escaped police custody alongside 12 other Eritrean suspects.
The interdiction came after AIG Masengeli, Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) boss Amin Mohamed and Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat visited the station and declared it a crime scene.
The eight police officers include the Gigiri Sub-County Police Commander, OCS and six other officers after the mystery escape of Kware murder suspect and 12 others. The six others include the Duty Officer, Duty NCO, Station Guards and Report Office Personnel.
The action has been taken because “the escape points to an inside job”.
The 12 others are Eritreans detained at the police station for overstaying in the country illegally.
“We are investigating the incident and our preliminary investigations indicate that the escape was aided by insiders, considering that officers were deployed accordingly to guard the station,” AIG Masengeli said.
“Consequently, I have interdicted eight(8) officers who were on duty last night.”
He added that the matter is currently under investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit, and any person found culpable will face the law.
“We have launched a manhunt to re-arrest the escapees. We further appeal to members of the public with any information that may lead to the re-arrest of the suspects, especially the murder suspect Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, to report to the nearest police station,” he said.
In July, Mr Jumaisi,33, confessed to having killed 42 women between 2022 and July 2024 including his wife, after his arrest.
He was detained following the discovery of at least 10 bodies and several body parts were found wrapped in plastic sacks in the Kware area of Nairobi.
An earlier report filed at the station under OB 05/20/08/2024, indicated that the 13 suspects had escaped by cutting the wire mesh at the basking bay.
“The matter was reported by police officers Evans Kipkirui and Gerald Mutuku who were manning the cells. They had made their routine visit to the cells to serve the inmates breakfast when they discovered the suspects had escaped,” the report read in part.
Under duress
Mr Jumaisi was in the cells, waiting to be arraigned for the plea-taking on Friday, August 23, 2024.
He made headlines after police paraded him before the media and claimed he had confessed to killing at least 42 women and dumping their bodies in Kware from 2022 to 2024.
Through his lawyer, John Maina Ndegwa, he later told the court that the police tortured him and forced him to confess to the murders and maintained he was not guilty.
He and two others were produced before Makadara Chief Magistrate Irine Gichobi, where the prosecution asked the court to allow them to detain the three accused for 21 days.
After hearing submissions from both parties, the court ruled that Mr Jumaisi, the main suspect, should be remanded at Gigiri Police Station for a further seven(7) days.
The other two accused, Mr Amos Momanyi and Mr Moses Ogembo, were remanded at Muthaiga police station for seven(7) days until August 26, 2024, when the case will be mentioned.
