Form Four student at Sironga Girls' School allegedly jumps to her death

  • The incident happened on Saturday morning, according to police and school officials.

Shock and grief gripped Sironga Girls' High School in Nyamira County after a Form Four student reportedly died by suicide.

The incident happened on Saturday morning, according to police and school officials.

The student, who was due to sit her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams next month, reportedly jumped off the building, causing immense grief among students and staff at the only national school for girls in Nyamira County.

Authorities are investigating the incident to establish the exact circumstances. Headmistress Jane Nyanumba said the tragedy happened while the other students were preparing to start their day.

"The girls were getting ready for the day when she jumped off the building. She was injured and rushed to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead," Ms Nyanumba said.

The head teacher also noted that the student had not shown any signs of distress before the incident.

“She was okay and even slept well. We are shocked,” she added. Fellow students and teachers described the girl as quiet, and the reasons behind her actions remain unclear.

Police detectives spent a significant part of Saturday at the school conducting investigations. Nyamira South Deputy County Commissioner Florence Obunga said she was informed of the incident by the school’s principal early in the morning.

“We went there with the subcounty security team and found that she had sustained head injuries,” Obunga explained.

The commissioner also expressed surprise at the event, noting that the school has a strong counseling department. The girl’s parents were notified and visited the school shortly after the incident.
