Gov't resolves stipend delays for health care interns

The Ministry of Health has announced the disbursement of Sh965.8 million to clear monthly stipends and arrears owed to health care interns.
The announcement was made through a press statement dated November 30, 2024, this seeks to strengthen Kenya’s health care system and address long-standing grievances regarding delayed payments.
The funds, targeting 4,947 interns, include payments for medical officers, pharmacists, dentists, clinical officers, and nursing officers.
Of this amount, Sh528.6 million settles arrears, while Sh110.6 million covers monthly stipends.
The Ministry also allocated KSh 326.6 million for backlogged payments to interns in medical and dental professions.

This intervention follows a series of protests earlier this year by healthcare interns over delayed postings and unpaid dues.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) played a key role in negotiations that resolved the stalemate. As of August 2024, upto 1,210 medical interns resumed work after months of uncertainty.
Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to resolving all remuneration disputes through court-mandated decisions.
The Ministry’s assurance of prompt payment reflects a renewed focus on Universal Health Coverage (UHC), aligning with national health care goals.
