High alert as Kiambu investigates suspected mpox case

The Kiambu County Government has confirmed that a suspected case of mpox is under investigation following concerns raised on social media.
The case is currently undergoing laboratory testing, and the county's health authorities have assured the public that they will provide a comprehensive update once the official results are available.
In a statement released on August 17, 2024, the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health Services Elias Maina urged residents not to panic.
“The County Department of Health Services has already activated all necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the community,” Dr Maina said.
The public has been advised to remain calm and follow the guidance provided by health officials.
Mpox is a viral illness that can manifest with symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion.
A characteristic rash often starts on the face before spreading to other parts of the body, eventually forming pustules and scabs.
To reduce the risk of contracting mpox, health authorities recommend avoiding close skin-to-skin contact with anyone showing signs of a rash or sores, maintaining good hand hygiene, avoiding contact with animals that might harbour the virus, and using personal protective equipment when caring for sick individuals.
The County Government said it is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond promptly to any developments.
