With just few hours left before Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) resumes, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has sharpened its focus on outreach, inclusivity, and clear messaging to attract millions of new Kenyans into the voters’ roll.

The commission has announced that CVR will resume on Monday, September 29, 2025, at constituency IEBC offices and select county and ward centres--excluding areas currently holding by-elections.

IEBC Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon has stressed that the upcoming exercise is critical for preparing the ground for the 2027 General Election.

During public engagements, Mr Ethekon said the commission aims to register about 6.3 million new voters, increasing Kenya’s electoral voice to over 28 million registered voters.

“We have heard sustained calls from youth and political leaders to resume voter registration,” Mr Ethekon said.

He noted that the commission has already begun preparatory work: mapping registration centres, gazetting registration officers, training personnel, testing equipment, engaging stakeholders, and deploying voter education.

The IEBC said the CVR exercise will target several groups:

Newly eligible citizens who have turned 18 and not yet registered

Unregistered eligible Kenyans who missed earlier registration windows

Current registrants wanting to update or correct their details

Voters needing to transfer registration to a new electoral area

Citizens seeking to verify their registration status online via verify.iebc.or.ke

The commission has also been clear on qualification criteria: to register, one must be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 and above, in possession of a valid national identity card or valid Kenyan passport.

They should not have previously registered as a voter, not convicted of an election offence within the past five years, and not been declared of unsound mind.
