Kalonzo: 'Adani-State deals are meant to auction Kenya'

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has accused President William Ruto's administration for inking a Sh95.7 billion deal with Adani Energy Solutions Limited for operation of electricity transmission lines and two(2) sub-stations for 30 years.

Mr Kalonzo vowed that they will challenge the agreement that was entered between Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) and Adani recently.

He accused the Kenya Kwanza government of allegedly “auctioning the country”.

"Two days ago, even with the overwhelming public resistance, the broad-based government went ahead to sign a Sh95 billion energy deal with Ketraco and Adani for another 30 years. This will not go unchallenged," Mr Kalonzo said.

He spoke on Sunday during a press briefing held in Nairobi.

"We want to assure Kenyans that we will not allow our country to be auctioned by this bread-based regime. We shall fight in parliament, we shall fight them in court, we shall fight them on the streets but we will never surrender our country to these later day merchants of Venice," Mr Kalonzo said.

The party leader said the recent impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was a scheme by the State to deviate Kenyans' attention from the multi-billion deal.

He said the country's key sectors – Energy, Transport to Health – have been earmarked to be linked to Adani through agreements with the government.

"We have seen multi-billion deals being granted by the broad-based government to one Adani in an opaque, non-competitive and secretive manner. Under the cloud of the impeachment drama, Kenya has been ‘Guptaed’ by Adani the way South Africa was state-captured," said Mr Kalonzo.

The former Vice President said they have already challenged the proposed Sh236 billion 30-year-deal between the government with Adani in court, regarding the upgrading of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

"In the health care sector, again against public outcry, the broad-based government signed another 104 billion deal for a defective SHA/SHIF system that has exposed Kenyans to great suffering and even deaths," Mr Kalonzo said.

"We reiterate our position that the impeachment drama was a smokescreen that was meant to divert the attention of Kenyans and provide cover for these multi-billion deals to be sealed by the broad-based government," he continued.
