Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Evans Kapkea has underscored the need for the community to unite in combating the rising cases of femicide and violence against women.

Mr Kapkea urged men to take the lead in protecting women and desist from turning against them.

"Men should speak boldly and loudly against femicide. I also want to challenge the church to step up and create awareness to stop the gruesome killings of women," said Mr Kapkea.

He was speaking during the wedding ceremony of William and Lorna Sawe at RCEA Chemaluk Church in Sergoit Ward, Moiben Sub County. Mr Sawe is a county employee in the department of Roads, Transport and Public Works.

Mr Kapkea further reiterated Governor Jonathan Bii's administration commitment in supporting President William Ruto's initiative to end these killings, recognizing the family as the fundamental unit of society.

He highlighted the critical role families play in the socialization and development of children.

County officials who attended the ceremony, including County Executive incharge of Public Service Management Elijah Kosgey and his Roads counterpart Joseph Lagat, noted the importance of social values in shaping individuals' personalities and instilling positive moral attributes.

They emphasized that such values enhance human traits, enabling people to become effective, productive and committed members of society.

Mr Sawe was praised for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to his job.

The wedding which was presided over by Rev Elkanah Jamin alongside RCEA Moderator John Kangogo of Koitoror Presbytery, concluded with a reception held at the couple’s home in Kaptuktuk Village, Tembelio Ward.

Other attendees included Chief Officer for Economic Planning Nathan Korir, Chief Officer for Trade Victorin Kapkiai, Eldoret City Manager Tito Koiyet, and Frederick Serem, who is Acting sub-County Administrator for Ainabkoi, among other distinguished guests.

A recent national survey revealed that 34 percent of women experienced physical violence in 2022, while the past two(2) weeks saw the brutal murders of at least six(6) women across different parts of the country.

Fida-Kenya has called for strengthened regulatory mechanisms for Airbnbs, where some of the reported murder incidents occurred.

Femicide Count Kenya recorded 152 killings in 2023, the highest in the past five(5) years, with women and human rights activists mentioning that the number could be much higher if the many unreported cases are factored in.
