Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Saturday toured Tatu City, the country’s first operational Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

His visit underscored the Kenya Kwanza administration’s acknowledgment of the critical role of SEZs in job creation, youth empowerment, and achieving sustainable development in line with Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (Beta).

SEZs are catalysts for economic progress, and Mr Mudavadi emphasised their pivotal role.

These zones aim to create an environment conducive to investment and job creation, particularly for young people.

Tatu City, with its strategic location, modern infrastructure, and favorable investment climate, exemplifies the potential of SEZs in shaping Kenya’s economic future.

Tatu City is more than just a physical location for it represents a vision for Kenya’s growth. Here is why.

Empowering the Youth

Tatu City serves as a breeding ground for the next generation of leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs.

By providing opportunities and fostering talent, it contributes to youth empowerment.

Innovative Infrastructure

Tatu City demonstrates what happens when innovative infrastructure meets strategic investments.

The city’s design integrates technology, sustainability, and functionality, setting a precedent for future developments.

Mudavadi highlighted the Digital Superhighway initiative—a critical component of the government’s plan to infuse technology into various economic sectors.

“Digital Superhighway is an ambitious project that aims to connect Kenya digitally, opening up new avenues for employment, especially in technology and communication,” Mr Mudavadi said.

Notably, Africa’s largest call centre, operated by Call Centre International (CCI), has already employed 5,000 people and is poised for further expansion

Tatu City’s development extends beyond its physical boundaries. Here is how.

Investor Incentives

As one of Kenya’s pioneering SEZs, Tatu City offers various incentives to attract investors.

Reduced corporate taxes, zero-rated VAT, and import duty exemptions make it an appealing destination for businesses.

Diverse Sectors

Mr Mudavadi explored Tatu City’s facilities, including the Fullcare Medical Garment Production Facility, Unity Homes, and Kenya Wines Agency Limited (KWAL).

These ventures span healthcare, real estate, and viticulture, showcasing the city’s versatility.

Tatu City’s distinction lies in being Kenya’s first operational SEZ. Its benefits extend beyond tax breaks.

Strategic Location

Situated near Nairobi, Tatu City bridges urban and rural landscapes.

Its accessibility enhances connectivity and trade.

Job Creation

The city’s growth surge has led to over 100 strategic new hires in 2023, reflecting its impact on employment.

International Recognition

The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recognised Tatu City as an ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) model zone, emphasising its sustainable practices.

Tatu City embodies Kenya’s aspirations for economic transformation.

By nurturing innovation, empowering youth, and integrating technology, it sets a blueprint for other SEZs.

As the country continues to invest in such initiatives, Tatu City remains a beacon of hope—a place where dreams converge with reality.

Tatu City is not just a development, but it is a vision realised—one that propels Kenya towards a brighter future.
