The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Central Management Committee has announced that Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o will temporarily assume responsibilities on behalf of the party leader, Raila Odinga, as the latter focuses on his African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson candidacy.

In a statement on Wednesday, ODM disclosed that this decision came after a private meeting led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, where the party discussed its internal matters.

Prof Nyong’o was over the moon as he thanked the party leader and ODM house.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our leader Raila Odinga and the the ODM party

Central Management Committee for entrusting me with the responsibility of Acting Party Leader. I deeply appreciate the confidence you have placed in me to oversee the party while Baba is away on international duties,” Prof Nyong’o said.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna who is the ODM Secretary General, explained that “regular gatherings like this allow the party to assess its current situation and remain aligned with its democratic principles”.

"There is no reason for the rumours and unfounded speculation surrounding our meetings," Mr Sifuna said, addressing recent claims of internal conflicts.

In the same announcement, ODM also called on several members from Kakamega County, including Governor Fernandes Barasa, to address disagreements within the County Assembly.

The party accused Mr Barasa of fueling divisions by supporting a faction opposed to Geoffrey Ondiro, the designated Majority Leader in the assembly.

"Our directive has repeatedly been undermined by individuals, including the County Governor, Speaker, and former Majority Leader," Mr Sifuna alleged.

The Committee has summoned these individuals to appear before it, with the exact date to be confirmed.

Additionally, ODM tasked Deputy Party Leaders--Kisii Governor Simba Arati and Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi--to mediate disputes within the party in Kilifi County.

They will work closely with ODM’s National Organising Secretary, Ahmed Abdisalan, to resolve the issues.

Mr Sifuna emphasized the importance of discipline within the party, urging members to refrain from actions that could harm ODM's reputation or its organizational structure.

He further reminded members that all sanctioned party meetings should be arranged and communicated through the National Secretariat.
