Opposition alliance demands Murkomen's resignation as protests grip Kenya

The National Alternative Alliance (NAA) on Tuesday demanded the immediate resignation of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.

It is blaming him for the ongoing violent crackdown on protesters and accusing him of failing to protect Kenyans’ constitutional rights.

Speaking at a Nairobi press briefing, NAA Convener Arnold Maliba, accompanied by Alliance leader Kennedy Ondiek, said the government had lost touch with the people and was now leaning on brute force to silence dissent.

“This country is sliding into anarchy, and if the President does not act now, we are heading into darker days,” said Mr Maliba.

In a strongly worded statement, the alliance urged President William Ruto to sack top security chiefs, including the Inspector General of Police and the Director of National Intelligence Services (NIS), accusing them of enabling widespread rights violations.

“Kenya is burning,” the statement read. “The country for which our forefathers shed their blood is sliding into anarchy. The dreams of generations and the lofty promises enshrined in our constitution are fading from the daily realities of ordinary citizens.”

The alliance blamed the unrest on rising youth unemployment, corruption, and poor governance.

It advised the President to halt extrajudicial killings and drop all charges against citizens and activists arrested for exercising their right to protest under Article 37 of the Constitution.

They further called for the interdiction of police officers, politicians, and government officials implicated in violence against demonstrators, and demanded an end to provocative and inflammatory statements by state actors.

“The people you have appointed to help deliver your vision are failing the nation,” the alliance stated, adding that recycling the same individuals into critical positions had only deepened public frustration.

On the Kenya Kwanza Manifesto, the NAA said, “While you are passionate about ‘The Plan,’ the truth is that if it were truly working, Kenya would not be experiencing the current turmoil.”

Mr Ondiek echoed the sentiment, urging President Ruto to take bold action to restore order.

“There must be a radical midterm review of government policies grounded in public participation and guided by the urgent needs of the people—job creation, justice, accountability, and integrity,” he said.

The alliance also hinted at a broader civic mobilisation ahead of Saba Saba Day, promising to stand with young Kenyans who are demanding a more just and responsive government.
