Promise less and do more, Ruto told

President William Ruto’s administration has been put to task to deliver the development agenda and policies it has made to Kenyans.

This comes amidst measures taken by Dr Ruto to form a broad-based government by incorporating a section of leaders from Mr Raila Odinga’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party into Cabinet.

A section of leaders, who were interviewed at K24 TV on Wednesday night, told the President and his new Cabinet to cease making more promises to Kenyans but focus on delivering development and reviving the economy.

Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba said the entry of ODM leaders into Cabinet will enhance endorsement of government policies in Parliament and muzzle its oversight role.

“I will tell you for a fact that this is a government that is credited for giving people false information. It keeps on contradicting itself on a daily basis by promising heaven and delivering hell,” Ms Wamuchomba said.

“Before the Cabinet was reconstituted, Parliament was a choir meant to provide a ‘nay or yay’ whenever it was needed because it had a majority of Kenya Kwanza MPs. It is now going to be worse for Kenyans because the choir has just become bigger. There will be no objectivity in Parliament,” she added.

Ms Wamuchomba accused Dr Ruto of “curing economic problems facing the country through politics”.

“They will carry the broad-based problems together. No wonder he (Dr Ruto) has now been traversing parts of the country on the car rooftop while making more promises. The President’s type of leadership is questionable and that is why the Gen Zs were protesting on the streets,” the MP said.

Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge said Dr Ruto’s previous Cabinet had failed to adequately communicate the government policies to the public.

“The previous Cabinet had a huge gap in communicating the policies that were being implemented. This current Cabinet should take note of that fact and up its game in terms of communication. The communication and delivery are conjoined,” Mr Mathenge said.

Former Senate Majority Leader Samuel Poghisio advised the President to work hard so as to regain trust from Kenyans.

The Former West Pokot Senator said: “In order for anything to work in this country, the President should realize that there is a trust deficit. The country must believe that what you promise is what you deliver.”

“If there is a lack of trust, people will no longer hear what you are saying. Because they have already concluded that what you are saying is unbelievable. He promised to introduce a lean and broad-based Cabinet. This was never realized because he said he would consult widely,” he added.

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga urged the country’s top leadership to deliver promises it made to Kenyans ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

“It is important that we talk less and work more. As the Kenya Kwanza government, we have an agenda and we must work towards fulfilling it. We must never forget that in 2027 there will be a political competition and that some of those whom we have invited into our house will be our competitors. It is time to be wary,” Mr Kahiga said.
