Opposition leader Raila Odinga has launched a relentless campaign across the African continent in his bid to become the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC).

With the February 2025 elections looming, Mr Odinga faces formidable competition from three other candidates who submitted their applications by the recent deadline.

In a dramatic turn of events, Fawzia Yusuf, a potential contender, has dropped out of the race.

On Friday, she announced her support for Mr Odinga.

“I am delighted to endorse Raila Odinga in his bid for the AUC chairmanship. I extend my heartfelt wishes for his success,” Ms Yusuf stated.

This unexpected move has reshaped the dynamics of the race, positioning Mr Odinga as the frontrunner.

The three remaining contenders challenging Mr Odinga's bid are Mohamoud Ali Youssouf (Djibouti), Anil Kumarsingh Gayan (Mauritius), and Richard Randriamandrato (Madagascar).

Youssouf is a seasoned diplomat with extensive experience in regional affairs while Gayan is known for his unwavering commitment to African unity and development. Randriamandrato is a respected figure in Francophone Africa.

Mr Odinga's campaign strategy spans the length and breadth of the continent.

His tour kicks off in Brazzaville, Congo, where he seeks the endorsement of Sasso Nguesso, a pivotal figure in French-speaking West and Central Africa.

Nguesso’s support could significantly bolster Mr Odinga's chances, given his influence among the Francophone member states.

Beyond leadership aspirations, the AUC chairmanship vote serves as a referendum on President William Ruto’s regional clout.

Dr Ruto is said to have mobilized Kenya’s diplomats to advocate fervently for Mr Odinga, his political nemesis whom they have since closed ranks in the wake of Gen Z protests back at home.

This whipping emphasizes the imperative of a united and integrated Africa.

Mr Odinga's recent meeting with European Union Ambassador Henriette Geiger underscores his commitment to AU reforms and cross-continental collaboration.

As the enigma of Kenyan politics criss-crosses the continent, engaging with global players, the race remains fluid.

Will he secure the coveted position, or will one of the other contenders emerge as the next AUC Chairperson?

Only time will reveal the outcome.
