The family of freelance photographer and videographer Joseph Owino Jonny, professionally known as Myles, is still in shock after his brutal death and is desperate for answers.

At 35 years old, Joseph was an experienced journalist with years of freelancing for various media outlets.

Discovery of the body

According to police reports, the mutilated body of the journalist was discovered on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, along the Naivasha–Mai Mahiu Road near Kihoto estate, about a kilometre from Naivasha town.

Residents who came upon the scene said the victim’s vehicle was parked nearby with doors open, and there were signs of a struggle on the ground.

Police indicated the body had suffered deep cuts and mutilation, suggesting Joseph was attacked before being dumped.

Investigators are examining items recovered from the car and the scene to gather leads. The Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary received the body, and an inquest file has been opened as detectives continue to probe the case.

Family first informed

Joseph’s brother, Robert Jonny, said he was contacted by a DCI investigative officer in Naivasha, Mr Peter Orwa, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, and asked to appear at the office without any explanation.

“I asked why I needed to come, but he only insisted I appear in person. They even asked for our parents’ contacts, which I did not provide,” Robert said.

He visited the DCI office the following day, Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. There, he was questioned about his relationship with Joseph and when they last spoke. It was only then that he learned his brother had been found murdered and dumped, and was shown a photograph of Joseph.

Robert told AVDelta News that the officer left in a hurry, leaving him with another investigator.

He returned the next day with their parents, hoping for more information, only to be told the officer in charge had been assigned to Kakamega and would return Wednesday, March 11, 2026.

“They promised to give us updates, but we left confused and heartbroken,” Robert said.

He added that investigators mentioned a female friend might have been in the vehicle at the time, though no statements or details have been shared.

Tragic loss for a young family

Joseph leaves behind a one-year-old child, whose mother highlighted the devastating loss and the family’s urgent demand for justice. The child now faces life without a father, intensifying the family’s grief.

Call for justice

As of Sunday, March 8, 2026, Joseph’s body remains at the mortuary, and his family continues to wait for critical updates from investigators.

They are urging authorities to speed up the probe, identify those responsible, and deliver justice.

This incident has also sparked concern over the safety of freelance journalists in Kenya, who often face significant risks while reporting and documenting stories that serve the public interest.
