A couple has been arrested in Nairobi following a reported kidnapping incident, which turned out to be part of a love triangle saga involving the woman, her husband, and her boyfriend.
The situation began on November 9, 2024, when the boyfriend, who resides in Nairobi, reported to Kitusuru Police Station that unknown individuals had kidnaped his girlfriend.
He claimed she had been lured with a job opportunity but was instead held for ransom, with the abductors demanding Sh150,000.
The Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCID) and operational teams launched a rescue operation. On November 13, they arrested a suspect in the Gitaru area of Kiambu County, linking him to a mobile number used in the ransom demands.
However, the claims were later found unsubstantiated, and the suspect was released as the search continued.
On November 16, a tip-off led police to Oldonyo Orok, Narok South, where the woman's phone was last traced.
Upon arrival, authorities found her at her husband's home with their two daughters. The husband denied any involvement in the alleged abduction.
Preliminary investigations revealed there had been no kidnapping; instead, the incident was rooted in a complex love affair and ongoing family disputes. Both the woman and her husband were subsequently taken into custody for further questioning in Nairobi.
Police spokesperson Resla Onyango stated that providing false information to police officers is a criminal offense under Section 129 of the Penal Code.
"We are also investigating the boyfriend in Nairobi to get a complete understanding of the incident," she added.
The boyfriend recounted receiving a missed call from a new number, during which a woman, purportedly his girlfriend, cried for help.
A man then took the phone and demanded Sh150,000, threatening to send a body if the ransom wasn't paid.
This case resembles a previous incident in September 2024, when three teenagers were arrested in Meru County for staging a fake kidnapping to extort Sh6 million from one of their parents.
The scheme, devised by two(2) boys and a girl as a get-rich-quick plan, was swiftly thwarted by Imenti North police officers, leading to the teens' arrest and reprimand.
