Police officers were on Monday morning deployed to Dagoretti High School in Nairobi County after students went on strike Sunday night causing considerable damage to the institution’s property.

Several students have been admitted to nearby hospitals as a result of the melee that rocked the school which has since been closed indefinitely following student unrest.

During the incident, students vandalised and damaged property within the school before the administration decided to send them home.

Police said at least 11 students were injured when they clashed over a basketball match they were playing on Sunday evening but boiled over into the night and turned religious.

Then groups used sticks and stones to attack each other in the chaos.

Police said they established that the students were playing basketball in the school when a dispute erupted between two students, Form One and Form Four.

This led to fighting between Sudanese students and Kenyan students.

As a result, 11 Sudanese students sustained minor injuries and were rushed to Garden Medical Clinic in stable condition.

While confirming the incident, area MP John Kiarie regretted the strike.

“Thankfully, even with the cases of injuries that are being attended to, there are no fatalities or burning,” Mr Kiarie said.

“Knowing, from previous experience, the contagious nature of such incidents, it is to call for reasoned, restrained and factual reporting and communication of the incident.”

Tension remained high on Monday with more police officers deployed there. Police said they are managing the issue with more deployments.
