The Kenyan government has unveiled a new initiative aimed at tackling environmental challenges while providing employment opportunities for the youths.
Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the launch of the Climate WorX Mtaani initiative during a preparatory meeting held on Tuesday, alongside key government officials, including Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga and Interior counterpart Raymond Omollo.
The initiative will engage over 13,000 youths in Nairobi County, with a focus on cleaning the Nairobi, Ngong, and Mathari Rivers as part of a broader effort to address environmental, and public health concerns.
The youth will also contribute to waste management, road improvements, sanitation in informal settlements, and the landscaping of riparian corridors.
“This initiative aligns with the government’s 15 Billion National Tree Growing Programme,” said CS Duale.
“The workforce will support tree planting efforts, restoring ecosystems, and enhancing climate resilience in Nairobi.”
Key government stakeholders at the event included PSs Festus Ngeno (Environment and Climate Change), Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry), Dhagar Mohammed (Transport), and Nixon Korir (Lands and Physical Planning).
The initiative represents a significant step toward integrating youths into Kenya’s climate action and resilience efforts while creating sustainable jobs in environmental conservation.
The programme is expected to contribute to Kenya’s ongoing efforts to mitigate climate change, with tree planting and ecosystem restoration playing central roles in the country's environmental agenda.
