Pan-African Parliament (PAP) President Fortune Zephania Charumbira has appointed Nyeri County Woman Representative Rahab Mukami as his senior advisor.

Ms Mukami is one of the five(5) Kenyan lawmakers’ representatives in the Pan-African Parliament.

The Parliament holds its sittings at Johannesburg in South Africa.

The Kenyan PAP lawmakers include Rahab Mukami (UDA), Joseph Majimbo (Ford Kenya), Danson Mungatana (UDA), Esther Passaris (ODM), and Margaret Kamar (Jubilee).

In November 2022, the Senate approved a list of five(5) lawmakers to represent Kenya in PAP.

Ms Mukami said she supported the candidature of Charumbira while he was contesting for the top seat.

The Parliament’s President is elected by representatives from the entire continent.

“I am privileged to be a member of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP) and I am glad to be appointed to be his senior advisor. I supported his candidature for the position by convincing members from all the States to elect him,” she said.

The MP said PAP’s role is to remove all barriers to thriving Intra-Africa Trade.

“Our intention of convening at that Parliament is to unite the entire continent towards a common goal of economic growth. A Free Trade Zone is one of the many tools that African countries should use to spur growth,” Ms Mukami said.

President Charumbira is from Zimbabwe.

The Parliament--PAP--was established in March 2004 and currently has a membership of 275.

The woman representative has appealed to Kenyans to embrace women leadership, saying that they are part of the driving engine to spurring economic growth.

Ms Mukami noted that women in the country have been politically awakened and should be supported to assist President William Ruto in transforming the economy.

The lawmaker was speaking at her Nyeri town office where she disbursed education bursary to deserving learners drawn from the county.

Ms Mukami defended Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza who was recently impeached by the Senate.

“Women are the best leaders. I don’t understand why people are very negative about women leadership. For instance, Governor Kawira Mwangaza was elected on an independent ticket and has demonstrated the strength of a woman in political leadership,” Ms Mukami said.

The MP lauded President Ruto for appointing women to key leadership positions in his administration.

“Counties which are being led by women governors have experienced tremendous growth. Men should understand that our role as women is not only to cook in the kitchen. We are educated and can as well contribute to the growth of this country,” she said.

“We thank the Kenya Kwanza administration, led by President William Ruto, for embracing women in top leadership positions in our country. This is a true testament that we can participate in transforming this nation,” she added.
