The onset of rains often triggers a rush for farm inputs, pushing prices up and forcing some small-scale farmers to delay planting.
Farmers across Kenya have received a timely boost as the government announced reduced maize seed prices just as the long rains begin.
In a directive from the Ministry of Agriculture, the government has allocated Sh2 billion to subsidise maize seeds through the Kenya Seed Company, lowering the cost of key planting inputs at a critical time in the farming calendar.
Under the new prices:
- 1kg will retail at Sh260
- 2kg at Sh525
- 10kg at Sh2,625
- 25kg at Sh6,560
The directive takes effect immediately.
Writing to the Managing Director of Kenya Seed Company, Principal Secretary for Agriculture Dr Paul Rono said the move is aimed at fast-tracking the subsidy programme.
“To realise the desired objectives of the programme, Kenya Seed Company is directed to reduce the prices of maize seeds,” said Dr Rono.
For many farmers, this comes as a relief. The onset of rains often triggers a rush for farm inputs, pushing prices up and forcing some small-scale farmers to delay planting or reduce acreage.
With lower seed prices, farmers are now expected to plant on time, which is key to achieving better yields and improving food supply.
However, attention now turns to availability and distribution, especially in remote areas where access to certified seeds remains a challenge.
For now, the signal is clear. The rains have started, and seeds are cheaper--time to plant.
