CS Geoffrey Ruku warns officials against diverting relief food, pledges porridge flour for schools nationwide to cushion vulnerable learners.
The government has started the school-feeding programme in Kangundo Constituency, in order to increase attendance of children in public primary schools in the region.
Cabinet Secretary in charge of Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, said the aim was to assist children who are from poor backgrounds with food, saying that most parents can't afford to provide the children with food.
‘’The aim of government to start school-feeding programme is to ensure that learning can go on uninterrupted by providing food to all public primary schools with relief food,’’ the CS said on Friday at Kangundo DEB Primary School ground, during the launch of school - feeding programme in the region.
Mr Ruku also said arrangements for other public schools across the country are in place to have porridge flour in all schools so that learners are cushioned.
The CS at the same time warned all public officers tasked with distributing relief food against diverting it for sale at the expense of vulnerable households who are struggling to put food on the table.
Area MP Fabian Kyule, on his part, thanked the government for the school feeding programme in the region saying that this would keep pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds in school.
“I thank the government for bringing this relief food to public schools in my constituency,” the lawmaker said.
He added that the programme will improve educational outcome, increase retention of learners and improve the overall well-being of the children.
The MP, who is also a lawyer, noted that this will help majority of the children to go to school comfortably because they are assured of a meal at lunch time and will not skip school due to lack of food.
