People's Liberation Party Leader and Senior Counsel Martha Karua appeared before Justice Dr Emmanuel Baguma in Kampala on Tuesday as the legal representative of Dr Kizza Besigye, witnessing firsthand his deteriorating health 465 days after his abduction in Nairobi.

“It was disheartening to see how his health is deteriorating,” Ms Karua said after the court session.

“I also had the privilege of sitting with Winnie Byanyima, whose strength is extraordinary and whose pain is real.”

Dr Besigye faces treason charges, including allegations of possessing firearms and seeking weapons abroad, which he and his co-accused Hajji Obeid Lutale deny.

Ms Karua told the court that the struggle for democratic spaces across Africa is a collective responsibility, vowing to continue advocating for citizens’ rights in Kenya and beyond.

“The fight for democratic spaces anywhere on this continent is a collective responsibility, and I will continue to do my part to fight for people’s rights in Kenya and beyond,” she said.

Human rights groups have repeatedly raised alarm over Dr Besigye’s deteriorating condition, noting persistent coughing, voice loss, and general weakness while in Luzira Prison.

Bail and medical transfer requests have been denied, according to his legal team.

The High Court in Kampala scheduled the next hearing, with the prosecution required to disclose all evidence by early March.

Meanwhile, supporters in Uganda have held vigils and prayer services for Dr Besigye’s release, highlighting concerns over political and human rights violations.
