Hundreds of traders at an open air market in Nyeri town have benefited from a water storage tank donation from their local Member of County Assembly (MCA) so as to enhance hygiene while operating their business.

The traders, operating near the bustling town’s central business district (CBD), received a 3,000-litre-capacity water storage tank from Rware ward MCA Simon Mbogo on Tuesday afternoon.

Ms Charity Nyawira, a trader, said they were previously experiencing problems in accessing clean water during water supply rationing periods by Nyeri Water and Sanitation Company (Nyewasco).

“We did not have a water storage tank and that is why we highly appreciate the intervention of our MCA for delivering this tank to us. Moving forward, we will not be experiencing such problems of water scarcity,” Ms Nyawira told AVDelta News.

The market’s chairperson, Mr Earnest Kuria, said the tank will serve a population of about 300 traders.

“We thank our MCA because this tank will assist us to store enough water which we will use to clean our products as well as enhance hygiene while serving our customers. We are about 300 traders who use this facility for our business,” Mr Kuria said.

MCA Mbogo said he opted to donate the tank after the market’s leadership approached him at his office with the request.

“This is what leadership entails. We should be focused on serving our people at the grassroots instead of politicking. This is a great milestone to traders of this market that is located near Nyeri town’s main bus terminus,” the MCA said.

“Henceforth, the traders will store their water and use it to maintain high hygiene standards while selling their produce to their customers,” he added.
