Mombasa port tackles congestion, clearance challenges to boost regional trade

  • Corporate

The Port of Mombasa has seen steady growth in cargo throughput in recent years, but congestion and slow cargo evacuation remain key challenges.

Vessel turnaround delays and backlogs of empty containers have in the past slowed trade flows to landlocked East African countries.

Coast MPs were on Wednesday assured that suthorities and stakeholders are implementing solutions to ease bottlenecks.

Accelerated deployment of the Port Community System and stronger coordination with Kenya Revenue Authority are improving clearance processes, reducing delays and demurrage costs for importers.

Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Capt. William Ruto gave the assurance when he hosted members of the Coast Parliamentary Group, led by Wundanyi MP Danson Mwashako.

The leaders reviewed port performance and regional development priorities.

The meeting focused on finding solutions to congestion, slow cargo evacuation, and other operational challenges affecting the port.

Expanded berthing and cargo handling infrastructure is also helping to match rising volumes.

Improved road and rail connections to inland destinations are further enhancing cargo movement, lowering logistics costs and strengthening the port’s role as a regional trade gateway.

These developments are expected to boost efficiency and support businesses across East Africa.

Regional integration remains a priority. The port serves as a critical entry point for cargo to Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Authorities are working with stakeholders under frameworks like the Northern Corridor to harmonise cross-border procedures, support shared infrastructure projects, and reduce trade barriers.

Strengthening these links will increase competitiveness and foster growth in regional supply chains.
