The National Police Service (NPS) has refuted allegations that former Limuru MP Peter Mungai Mwathi was arrested following a fracas that disrupted the funeral of Erastus Nduati in Limuru on Thursday.

In a press statement issued on Friday, the police clarified that Mr Mwathi is not a person of interest in their investigations.

Chaos erupted at Bibirioni Boys High School as Mr Mwathi was addressing mourners, prompting unidentified individuals to hurl chairs and blunt objects, scattering attendees.

“Property of unknown number and value was damaged,” the statement read.

Contrary to circulating reports, the NPS stated it did not arrest Mr Mwathi.

Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Limuru are actively pursuing leads to identify those responsible for the disruption.

The incident has sparked political backlash, with allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua criticizing the police.

Mr Gachagua’s supporters, who have been vocal in opposing what they term ‘targeted harassment’ claimed Mr Mwathi was abducted by men in Subarus.

The NPS has appealed to anyone with information to assist the investigations, pledging commitment to justice and public safety.

“We call upon anybody with information to report to the nearest police station,” the Inspector General reiterated.

As investigations continue, questions remain over the motives behind the attack and its implications on local politics.
