A police officer was on Thursday arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring Tuk-tuk drivers, who he claimed were attempting to kidnap him.

According to a police report, police constable Nathan Bett who had been deployed to maintain order in the court premises returned his Ceska pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.

Upon inquiry, it was established that the officer had fired two rounds of ammunition during a scuffle between him and the Tuk-tuk drivers along Kakamega-Kisumu Road.

Nehemiah Kiprono, the police officer in charge of the Kakamega police armoury, reported on Wednesday that Bett had returned his pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.

Investigations revealed that Bett had fired two rounds of 9mm ammunition during the scuffle with the Tuk-tuk drivers.

According to police officer Bett, the Tuk-tuk crew declined to stop to allow the officer to alight at the Kakamega Police Station gate, adding that the unknown individuals had the intention of kidnapping him and fired rounds to defend himself.

28-year-old Derick Chibini sustained two(2) gunshot injuries on the left shoulder and another one penetrating the right collarbone and exiting on the left collarbone.

Mr Chibini was first rushed to Mukumu dispensary and later referred to Oasis Multispecialty Hospital in Kakamega where he is admitted in fair condition.

Police said Bett is in custody for attempted murder, adding that action will be taken against Mr Kiprono for issuing a Ceska pistol to a member of other ranks.
