Raila meets President Denis Sassou Nguesso to bolster his AUC bid

In a significant diplomatic move, Kenya’s candidate for the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, Raila Odinga, engaged in a high-level meeting with the President of the Republic of the Congo Denis Sassou Nguesso.

The meeting, held in Brazzaville aimed to secure crucial support for Mr Odinga’s bid to lead the AUC.

This meeting comes hot on the heels of Mr Odinga’s endorsement by other African leaders, including the former Somalia Prime Minister, Fauzia Adam.

Kenyan opposition party leader and former Prime Minister, Mr Odinga, an advocate for pan-Africanism, has intensified his campaign for the top continental job.

His strategic approach involves seeking endorsements from heads of states across the continent.

On his LinkedIn account, Mr Odinga stated that he met with President Nguesso with whom they discussed matters security, development, and climate change as he sought support for his AUC Chairmanship Race.

AUC chairman candidate Mr Odinga, highlighted how Nguesso’s endorsement contributes greatly in his mission to chair AUC.

In his statement he noted, “President Denis Nguesso’s endorsement greatly strengthens our mission”.

Bolstered by the strong backing of Kenyan President William Ruto and state machinery, Mr Odinga leverages his extensive connections.

His entourage included former Kenyan ambassador to the United States(the US), Elkanah Odembo, and university don Prof Makau Mutua.

Their discussions centered on foundational matters crucial for creating lasting prosperity and advancing Africa’s shared future.

Mr Odinga faces formidable opponents in the race for AUC Chairperson.

His competitors include Mahmoud Ali Youssouf from Djibouti, Anil Kumarsingh Gayan of Mauritius, and Richard Randriamandrato of Madagascar.

However, Mr Odinga’s commitment to pan-Africanism and his network of influential allies position him as the strongest contender in the lot.

The endorsement by President Nguesso underscores the importance of collaboration and unity in addressing Africa’s challenges.
