A fake NIS ‘Deputy Commissioner’ found with 10-year-old boy and KDF letters
A man claiming to be a senior intelligence officer walked into a quiet village in Trans Nzoia with a 10-year-old boy—until what detectives found in his bag raised more questions than answers.
Detectives in Kiminini Sub-county arrested the 56-year-old suspect, identified as Gilbert Nyabuto, after he allegedly introduced himself as a ‘Deputy Commissioner’ with the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
The arrest followed a tip-off from members of the public who grew suspicious of an unfamiliar man seen roaming Nyamira Village in the company of the young boy.
But it is what officers discovered during a search that has intensified the investigation.
Inside his backpack were assorted academic documents belonging to different individuals, alongside blank Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) calling letters—items that detectives now believe could point to a wider scheme.
Nyabuto had presented an identification document bearing the NIS rank and a service number in an apparent attempt to reinforce his cover.
When questioned about the boy, he claimed he was helping him secure accommodation.
The explanation did little to ease concerns.
The minor was later positively identified by his mother from Salona area and has since been safely reunited with her.
Nyabuto remains in custody as detectives pursue further investigations to establish the full extent of his activities, including possible offences of impersonation and fraud.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has commended members of the public for the timely tip-off that led to the arrest and the safe rescue of the child.
