Activist and Bunge la Mwananchi President Francis Awino was on Tuesday attacked by suspected goons shortly after a press briefing in Nairobi, leaving him injured.

Awino was attacked along Kimathi Street. According to witnesses, a group of goons stormed the area causing panic among journalists and members of the public.

In the melee, Awino attempted to seek refuge inside the Nation Centre building but goons cornered him.

He sustained head injuries and fellow activists claimed that his tormentors left him for the dead along the road, writhing in pain.

He later recounted the ordeal, explaining how he was cornered as security struggled to restore order.

“I was trying to get inside for safety, but I was pushed back and attacked. They beat me and I sustained injuries to my head,” he said.

Awino had been speaking to the press at Milimani Law Courts Nairobi, where he criticised the government’s handling of the ongoing fuel scandal and called for the resignation of Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, who has since announced that the State rejected 60,000 tonnes of petrol shipment whose value had been inflated and was imported outside the government-to-government framework.

The activist was later rushed to hospital for treatment as fellow campaigners condemned the incident.

Some activists, speaking after the attack, alleged that the assailants had been sent by the Energy CS following Awino’s remarks, claims AVDelta News cannot independently verify.

The incident has raised concerns over the safety of activists amid heightened political tensions around accountability issues.
