NAIROBI April 9, 2026 – Africans can now fund their crypto accounts directly using mobile money, thanks to a new partnership between VALR, the continent’s largest crypto exchange by trade volume, and Onafriq, Africa’s leading digital payments gateway.

The integration lets users deposit funds in local currencies, which are then settled in stablecoins or other cryptocurrencies, removing the need for traditional banks.

This is a major boost for financial inclusion, particularly in regions where banking access is limited.

Mobile money has already transformed Africa’s financial landscape.

According to GSMA, there were over 2.1 billion registered mobile money accounts globally at the end of 2024, with half a billion monthly active users.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, mobile money contributed around $190 billion to GDP in 2023 alone.

Onafriq connects nearly 1 billion mobile wallets across 43 countries, giving VALR users a seamless way to fund accounts for trading Bitcoin, over 100 crypto assets, tokenised real-world assets like gold and equities, lending, staking, and payments via VALR Pay.

“Mobile money has reshaped financial access across Africa. This partnership allows millions to easily enter global digital markets,” said Farzam Ehsani, VALR Co-Founder and CEO.

Onafriq CEO Dare Okoudjou added, “We are excited to bring VALR onto our network, connecting their clients to 1 billion mobile wallets and hundreds of thousands of businesses across Africa.”

With this move, millions of Africans can now access crypto trading, investment products, and innovative financial tools without needing a traditional bank account — a step that could redefine financial participation across the continent.
