Atwoli: ‘Ruto will win 2027 elections by 6am, Kenya lacks formidable opposition’
Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU‑K) Secretary General Francis Atwoli on Monday in Kilifi delivered a blunt forecast for national politics, asserting that President William Ruto will win the 2027 elections easily — “by 6am” — because Kenya currently has no effective opposition.
“Ruto will take the presidency by 6am in 2027. Kenya has no opposition capable of challenging him now,” Mr Atwoli declared.
“Politics is not about speeches or promises; it’s about action. Those who fail to engage the people cannot claim leadership.”
In his address, Mr Atwoli also criticised what he described as ineffective mobilisation by some leaders in past elections, a reference to former President Uhuru Kenyatta and his endorsement of opposition candidates.
“Even the young leaders I advised, like him, were lazy in ensuring their promises reached the people. Leadership requires action, not words,” Mr Atwoli said.
His comments come against the backdrop of recent political manoeuvring.
At the burial of former Senator Daniel Karaba in Kirinyaga County, Uhuru met with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and several opposition leaders, where he urged them to stay united and challenge President Ruto in 2027, cautioning against division and urging a cohesive front.
Speaking at the burial of Kilifi North MP Owen Baya’s mother, Mama Dorothy Baya Mweri, Mr Atwoli also praised local leaders such as Mombasa Abdulswamad Nassir, Kilifi South MP Ken Chonga and other MPs for their community engagement.
“We must respect those who work diligently. The Coast region has shown wisdom, and local leaders have united behind the president,” he said.
Drawing from decades of political experience, Mr Atwoli referenced his work with Raila Odinga, Presidents Moi and Kibaki to emphasise that loyalty and proactive leadership are key to national progress as Kenya heads into the 2027 polls.
“I have advised and supported many leaders. Those who are lazy or fail to honour commitments undermine our nation. We must set aside disputes and work together for Kenya,” Mr Atwoli said.
