Senior Counsel Charles Kanjama's focused manifesto-selling campaign has reaped fruits, after he garnered 3,728 votes to be announced the 52nd President of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) on Thursday.
Mr Kanjama takes the mantle from the outgoing LSK President Faith Odhiambo.
He will serve for a term of two years, with sexual harassment of young lawyers as the obstacle he must dismantle.
“We are here at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to confirm victory," Kanjama said as he thanked colleagues for showing confidence in his leadership abilities.
In the race, Peter Wanyama emerged second with 2,616 votes, while Mwaura Kabata, the current LSK vice president, got 2,086 votes to emerge as the second runner-up.
Just hours before the polls, Kanjama had gained visible support in the race, with endorsements from prominent lawyers.
In a public Facebook endorsement on Wednesday, Joy Mdivo--an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, Chairperson of the Board of Directors at Kenya Power and Lighting Company, and former LSK Nairobi Branch council member--threw her weight behind Mr Kanjama’s bid.
Ms Mdivo highlighted Mr Kanjama’s past leadership of the LSK Nairobi Branch, noting his ability to hold a disciplined council with cohesion and impact.
She cited his role in securing allocations for branches, supporting staff and interns, and launching the Nairobi Legal Awards, a celebration of excellence in the legal profession.
In her words, “As a legal practitioner he knows where our bread-and-butter issues have suffered, and the time has come for the profession to look inwards and help us regain our footing, making practice a profitable venture.” (Mdivo Facebook).
Ms Mdivo also emphasized the need for transparency and competence in delivering the planned Wakili Towers project, saying her experience as a former LSK treasurer gives her confidence in Mr Kanjama’s integrity.
Mr Kanjama has been involved in LSK leadership before, serving as the inaugural Chair of the LSK Nairobi Branch (2016–2020) and as Council Member and Treasurer.
Other endorsements, such as the public backing from Nelson Havi, a former LSK president who pledged resources and support, also catapulted Mr Kanjama ahead of his competitors.
His platform emphasized rule of law, integrity, and advocacy welfare.
The LSK presidency is a prestigious role representing over 20,000 practising advocates in Kenya. The outcome will now shape approaches to professional ethics, legal practice standards, and the society’s role in defending constitutional principles in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
