The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a full-scale investigation into the mob killing of George Olande Otobe, alias ‘Omundu’, which occurred on Saturday during a political rally in Mbale Town.
According to the DCI, preliminary findings indicate that Otobe allegedly stabbed Hussein Hassan in the head, provoking retaliation by bystanders.
A knife was recovered at the scene, and Otobe’s body was first taken to Vihiga County Referral Hospital mortuary.
It was later transferred to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH), where a postmortem confirmed death from multiple severe head injuries consistent with mob violence.
The DCI noted that organisers of the Linda Mwananchi rally allegedly armed their supporters, contravening constitutional requirements for peaceful assembly.
“The Constitution guarantees every Kenyan the right to assemble peacefully, but this right is conditional on remaining unarmed and orderly,” the DCI said. “Failure to uphold this obligation endangers lives.”

The DCI extended condolences to the family and wished Mr Hussein Hassan a full recovery.
Officers on the ground were commended for restraint, which prevented further escalation.
Investigations are ongoing, and the DCI warned that anyone found culpable, whether for mob violence or arming supporters, will be held accountable under the law.
