SABAH, Malaysia

A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sabah in eastern Malaysia early Monday, sending tremors across parts of Borneo and as far as Singapore, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake hit at approximately 12:57am local time (7:57pm Sunday, Nairobi time), with its epicentre about 55 kilometres north-northwest of Kota Belud.

It originated at a depth of roughly 620 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface--an unusually deep focus that significantly reduced the risk of widespread destruction.

Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning was issued, as deep earthquakes of this nature are unlikely to trigger sea waves.

Malaysia’s Meteorological Department also said there were no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage.

Residents in parts of Sabah reported feeling mild to moderate shaking, while light tremors were also detected in neighbouring Sarawak and Singapore.

Emergency services conducted precautionary patrols, but officials said the overall impact appeared minimal.

Seismologists noted that the quake’s depth meant much of its energy dissipated before reaching the surface, lowering the likelihood of severe ground shaking.

Experts further indicated that such deep-focus earthquakes do not necessarily signal an increased risk of imminent major tremors in the region.

Malaysia is not located directly on the Pacific Ring of Fire but can experience occasional seismic activity due to regional tectonic movements affecting northern Borneo.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and have advised the public to remain calm while staying updated through official channels.
