Gachagua’s net fishes Kanini Kega to DCP

The move is seen as strategic for Mr Gachagua, as DCP seeks to position itself as a credible platform for leaders aiming at future governance.

Days after former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua lost the support of Juja MP George Koimburi, he has turned the spotlight to East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega into the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Mr Gachagua posted a striking photo online, placing a DCP Party cap on Kanini Kega’s head, with the caption: “Welcome home Hon Kanini Kega. DCP Party is the home of progressive leaders who desire leadership in the future.”

Kanini Kega, formally known as James Mathenge Kanini, served three terms as Kieni MP before losing the seat in 2022.

His current role at the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) in Arusha, Tanzania, brings regional influence and legislative experience to his new political home.

The move is seen as strategic for Mr Gachagua, as DCP seeks to position itself as a credible platform for leaders aiming at future governance.

Mr Kega has navigated multiple political affiliations, from Jubilee’s leadership structures to the Kieleweke faction allied with former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

His move to DCP signals another potential shift in central Kenya’s political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

For Mr Gachagua, the timing is crucial. Just days earlier, Mr Koimburi had publicly distanced himself, highlighting tensions within existing party blocs.

The entry of Kanini Kega into DCP may help offset the loss, strengthening Mr Gachagua’s appeal to experienced political figures.

DCP, launched in mid-2025, has steadily attracted leaders from across the country, emphasizing an inclusive, forward-looking platform.
