Former UDA Senator Ms Gloria Orwoba was on Wednesday barred from entering the Senate chambers during the impeachment hearing of Kericho Governor Eric Mutai, despite producing a court order reinstating her.
The former nominated senator arrived at Parliament clutching the order, which she insisted restored her position following her earlier expulsion by the party.
However, her attempts to walk into the chamber were blocked by security officers, who told her they had not received any instructions to admit her.
Ms Orwoba protested outside the entrance, accusing Senate Speaker Amason Kingi of disregarding the Constitution and undermining the authority of the courts.
She claimed the Speaker had instead allowed newly nominated senator Ms Consolata Nabwire, whom she described as “a stranger,” to sit and vote during the crucial session.
Her public confrontation drew attention to the wider political wrangles in the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Ms Orwoba, known for her outspoken style and her past activism on issues such as menstrual health, was expelled from the party earlier this year (2025) on grounds of indiscipline.
She challenged the decision in court and secured orders temporarily reinstating her to her seat.
The standoff on Wednesday highlighted the tension between the Judiciary and Parliament over enforcement of court decisions.
By mid-morning, Ms Orwoba remained locked out, drawing a small crowd of journalists and sympathisers as she vowed to pursue further legal action against the Speaker and the Senate leadership.
Inside the chamber, the impeachment hearing against Governor Mutai proceeded with Ms Nabwire taking part, underscoring the political stakes at play.
For Ms Orwoba, however, the day was less about the fate of the Kericho governor and more about what she termed a fight for constitutional fidelity and her political survival.
