Coast leaders will gather in Kilifi on Wednesday to commemorate the late Raila Odinga (who would have turned 81 if he was alive), celebrating his enduring legacy of resilience and mentorship.
Leaders and supporters from across the Coast region are set to gather this Wednesday to commemorate what would have been the 81st birthday of the late former Prime Minister and veteran opposition leader, Raila Amolo Odinga.
Organised by the Hassan Joho Foundation, the event will bring together senior political figures, opinion leaders and close allies for a reflective ceremony aimed at celebrating Odinga’s enduring influence on Kenya’s democratic journey.
Speaking ahead of the event, Mining, Fisheries and Blue Economy Cabinet Secretary Hassan Joho said the gathering will honour Odinga’s long and eventful political life, noting that his story is one of resilience, purpose and mentorship.
Mr Joho described Raila as a leader whose vision “did not end with him; it took root in the minds and hearts of those he mentored”.
“His journey teaches us that resilience is not the absence of struggle but the courage to walk through it with purpose,” Joho said in a social media statement, underlining that true leadership is measured by its impact on future generations.
The tributes come amid ongoing national reflection on Odinga’s legacy, following his death on 15 October 2025 while undergoing medical treatment in southern India.
Odinga’s passing prompted widespread mourning across Kenya and a series of memorial events, including a state funeral that drew thousands of Kenyans and international dignitaries.
The Wednesday commemoration in Kilifi is expected to balance solemn reflection with celebration, as participants share personal memories and recount how the late statesman’s ideals shaped their own public service.
The programme will highlight key milestones in Odinga’s career, from his relentless advocacy for multiparty democracy to his role in constitutional reforms and national cohesion.
Odinga, affectionately known as “Baba”, was a central figure in Kenya’s political landscape for decades, earning respect for his principled stance on justice, accountability and inclusive leadership.
His influence extended beyond politics into social mobilisation and mentorship of emerging leaders across regional and generational lines.
As Coast leaders and supporters prepare for the tribute, organisers emphasise that the event is not just a remembrance of Raila Odinga the politician.
It is a celebration of Raila Odinga the mentor and symbol of resilience whose ideals continue to resonate in Kenya’s public discourse.
