Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Tuesday addressed public concerns about Nairobi Hospital, one of Kenya’s leading private medical institutions, following appeals from senior doctors regarding governance and management issues.

“The government is committed to protecting this critical national asset from mismanagement, exploitation and corruption,” CS Duale said.

“Those found culpable of wrongdoing will be held fully accountable in accordance with the law.”

He added that the government will take “decisive and sustained action” to maintain the hospital’s integrity, efficiency, and public trust.

“Our goal is to ensure Nairobi Hospital continues to serve patients effectively and maintains its reputation as a centre of medical distinction,” CS Duale said.

Doctors’ appeal and presidential role

Senior doctors at Nairobi Hospital publicly sought intervention from President William Ruto, who is the patron of the hospital’s parent body, the Kenya Hospital Association (KHA).

They cited ongoing governance challenges that they said threatened the stability of the institution.

Prior to approaching the President, the doctors reportedly met with Head of Public Service Felix Koskei and Health CS Aden Duale to discuss their concerns.

According to State House, the President has been briefed on these issues and emphasised that any resolution must follow transparent and lawful processes.

Court background

The statement follows the arraignment on Monday of four senior hospital officials — board chairman Dr Job Obwaka, vice chairman Samson Kinyanjui, and directors Chris Bichage Munga Nyamaratandi and Valarie Akinyi Gaya — at Milimani Law Courts.

All four pleaded not guilty to charges linked to their roles in Kenya Hospital Association Limited, the entity that operates Nairobi Hospital.

Senior Principal Magistrate Teresia Nyangena released each official on a Sh5 million personal bond with two contact persons, and directed prosecutors to provide evidence to the defence within 14 days.

The case is set for pre-trial mention on March 31, 2026.

Allegations against the directors

Chris Nyamaratandi allegedly received Sh4.8 million from Meritorious Insurance Agency between November 2023 and March 2024.

Samson Kinyanjui allegedly received Sh3,999,996 from the same firm between December 2024 and March 2025.

The four directors are also charged with failing to file the hospital’s financial statements for 2022, 2023, and 2024 within legally required timelines.

During the bail hearing, defence lawyers highlighted prior anticipatory bail for Nyamaratandi and Dr Obwaka’s age (80) and medical conditions.
