Neighbours and children watched in horror as Murad Awadh Mbaraka attacked his wife following disputes over her Instagram use.
The High Court in Mombasa has sentenced 40-year-old Murad Awadh Mbaraka to 30 years in prison for killing his wife, Nuru Ibrahim, at their home in Majengo Kanamai, Kilifi County.
Justice Wendy Kagendo, delivering the judgment on Friday, said the attack was premeditated and deliberate, highlighting the extreme danger posed to the family.
Children and neighbours saw the horror
Prosecution, led by Frank Sirima, presented testimony from 10 witnesses.
Forensic analysis linked Mbaraka directly to the crime, with the deceased’s blood found on a knife, pieces of a broken baby cot allegedly used in the assault, and on his clothing.
The couple’s five children were present during the attack, including an 11-year-old daughter who described hearing her mother scream for help as Mbaraka repeatedly struck her.
Neighbours who attempted to intervene were reportedly threatened and blocked from assisting.
Accused’s alibi dismissed
Mbaraka’s claim that an intruder committed the crime was rejected, and his employer contradicted his alibi.
Justice Kagendo stressed the severity of the offence, saying the sentence serves both as punishment and a deterrent against domestic violence. The convict has 14 days to appeal.
Public outrage and calls for action
The case has triggered public debate about domestic violence, family safety, and the dangers of online disputes escalating into real-life tragedies.
Experts during tge hearing warned that early intervention and family support programs are critical to preventing such incidents.
